BACKGROUND:

The Feed the Future Malawi Growth Poles Activity overall goal is to accelerate environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable, resilient, and more inclusive wealth generation in Malawi by mobilizing rural-based private sector investments
and partnerships with anchor firms and their surrounding communities, smallholder organizations, cooperatives, and MSMEs in a growth pole approach, with a focus on ensuring benefits are inclusive of smallholders, youth, and women.

Growth Poles Activity would like to fill the following positions:

Project Associate – 2 positions

Objectives:

The Project Associate will assist in the establishment of micro-drip irrigation systems for target groups and also assist with other Outcomes assignments.

Duty Station: Lilongwe & Rumphi, Malawi
Reporting: Nutrition Specialist

Key responsibilities:

  • Mobilize communities to establish group micro-drip irrigation system following recommended standards.
  • Lead in the design and installation of micro drip irrigation system to promote production of diverse nutrient rich vegetables to address nutrition and income.
  • Work with partners and district level teams to ensure that appropriate groups are identified for production of highly nutritious vegetables using micro drip irrigation system in backyard gardens for nutrition and income.
  • Provide support to Village Agents on the establishment of micro drip irrigation gardens to promote diversification of climate adaptive agriculture for farmer groups and demonstrate the use of integrated pest and disease management.
  • Build the capacity of Village Savings and Loans (VSL) groups engaged in micro drip
    irrigation in good governance, financial literacy, record keeping, marketing, crop
    husbandry practices, value addition and post-harvest handling.
  • Facilitate timely distribution of materials for installation of small-scale drip irrigation and provide support in maintenance and linkage with suppliers.
  • Ensure cross cutting (gender, diversity and environmental) issues are taken into consideration for planning and implementation of activities.
  • Train farmers to demonstrate and understand crops seasonal calendar to ensure high productivity upon following good agronomic practices.
  • Ensure close coordination and integration with other key project components and cross-cutting themes such as production, resilience, and economic empowerment.
  • Participate in formative research, annual work-planning, and monitoring initiatives to identify the best, cost-effective strategies for improving production.
  • Identify lessons learnt and success stories and ensure proper documentation and timely submission.
  • Compile and submit progress reports with tangible deliverables based on project
    objectives and goals.

Qualifications

  • Must be a degree holder with at least 5 years’ experience in community development, horticulture, Agribusiness.
  • Knowledge of group dynamics and operation of the Village Savings and Loan (VSL) groups.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Motor Bike riding Licence an added advantage.
