ActionAid Malawi is a locally registered non‐governmental organisation under the Company’s Act 1984 as a company limited by guarantee and is affiliated to ActionAid International, a federation of national organizations working in over 45 countries in Africa, Asia, America and Europe regions. ActionAid International is a global justice Federation working to achieve social justice, gender equality and poverty eradication. ActionAid works to strengthen the capacity and active agency of people living in poverty and exclusion, especially women, to assert their rights.

ActionAid Malawi is implementing the Valuing Women’s Work (VWW) program, and this is an initiative that exemplifies on-the-ground implementation of ActionAid’s theory of change and delivery of federation-wide priorities to achieve social justice, gender equality and poverty eradication.

At the center of the program is the collectivization and mobilization of young women in urban spaces to influence local, national, and international decision-makers to implement policy actions that respond to young women’s demands on economic security, reproductive justice, and gender responsive public services.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Feminist Digital Engagement Officer

Reporting to: Business Development Grants Management & Communication Manager and the Valuing Women`s Work(VWW) Program Coordinator.

Duration: August 2023 to April 2026

Location: Lilongwe

Role Overview:

This role is responsible for growing feminist digital advocacy engagement with young people and our target audiences of decision makers, policy makers and civil society organisations in Malawi and around the world. It oversees VWW program social media content and growth and leads the analysis of our digital performance. It plays a central role in understanding the behaviour of our local and international digital audiences, maximising online political and advocacy opportunities, and delivering high-quality digital impact on VWW programme objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to, and support colleagues in, regular digital content creation and delivery.
  • Support the VWW Program Coordinator with project planning and implementation.
  • Schedule, coordinate and produce proactive and reactive content for public advocacy and political engagement to advance feminist economic alternative policy propositions.
  • Work with communications and Programmes colleagues to identify and exploit digital engagement opportunities that deliver on our VWW programme objectives.
  • Develop and deliver strategies for building relationships with external partners to amplify our advocacy messaging across third-party social media channels.
  • Develop and deliver strategies for paid and non-paid social media (to grow engagement with our target audiences
  • Work with the Communications team and the VWW Coordinator to keep our social media platforms fresh and engaging, advising on best practices and analytics for reach, growth and engagement.
  • Manage growth and engagement across all our other social media channels ensuring timely, relevant and platform-appropriate messaging and content.
  • Manage and develop our social media monitoring tools to identify understand, grow and report on our target audiences in multiple countries.
  • Report on digital growth and engagement activity within the team and to the wider organization, advising colleagues on improvements.
  • Contribute to the production of high-quality multi-media content for use on our channels and those of our partners.
  • Stay ahead of technical and social media trends and work with the team to apply across our channels as appropriate.

Person Specification

  • At least 5 years demonstrable experience of using social media tools and tactics for feminist advocacy, activism, and political engagement.
  • Demonstrable experience of successfully using paid and unpaid social media platforms for channel growth and amplification.
  • Demonstrable experience of digital insight analysis and social media listening/monitoring.
  • Understanding of and experience in delivering feminist macro-economic digital advocacy for audiences in multiple countries.
  • Ability to manage projects, multi-task and set priorities, and to work under pressure.
  • A strong personal commitment to the mission and values of AAM.
  • A flexible style and willingness to work in a small, collaborative team.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in the field of Social Science, Public Policy Advocacy, Women’s Rights or Communication.
  • Proven experience managing social media and digital communities for a large organization to advance to advance feminist economic alternative policy propositions.
  • Good knowledge of on-and off-line international and local audience
  • Experience in implementing feminist advocacy strategies to leverage the power of online media and audience engagement.
  • Knowledge and experience of the not-for-profit sector, preferably of women’s rights/human rights non-government organizations.
  • Proven communications background with an overall understanding of the sector.
  • Demonstrable success with online community development and management.
