Job Description

• To evaluate counter-party credit risks associated with the Bank’s lending and investment activities at the client interface, with the primary objective to contain credit risk within acceptable parameters whilst maintaining a high quality and profitable loan book. To contribute to a consistently positive and seamless client credit experience by delivering an effective and efficient Credit Origination process, thus increasing the successful conclusion of deals.

Qualifications

• First Degree in Business related field
• Knowledge and Experience
• 3-5 year experience in a similar Credit role with proven ability to undertake financial and credit analysis. A proven track record of operating with a personal delegated authority. Business development experience is an advantage.
• Conceptual understanding of credit policies/principles and how its successful application can lead to market success
• In-depth understanding of financial markets and an application of the entire range of products and services available to meet the needs of the bank’s corporate clientele
• Ability to analyse financial statements to estimate the degree of risk in extending credit
• Good credit structuring skills and ability to model cash flows
• General knowledge of practical economics relating to business, industry and the Malawian macro-economic environment.
• Utilize relevant economic, financial and industry data to assess business performance and make recommendations to ensure continued growth, viability and competitive advantage within sensible risk parameters.
• Strong writing skills for reports and credit applications
• Strong presentation skills and ability to articulate a credit request to a credit committee
• Comprehensive understanding of business risks and the economic environment
• Product knowledge – with a focus on structured lending products, trade products including letters of credit and guarantees within Trade and working capital. In addition, knowledge is required around Investment Banking products with a bias towards term lending.

Additional Information

Key Responsibilities

• Provision of direct (specialist/professional) credit evaluation services at the customer interface.
• Build Credit Partnership with Account Executives and Head of BCB at departmental level in setting strategies and achievement of asset (lending) growth and profitability targets.
• Preparations of formal Credit Applications.
• Analyze the submission of credit applications, to ensure that proposals / applications meet the required criteria.
• Provide expert service to business partners on credit risk, portfolio analysis, credit assessment and management as well as internal controls on new and existing accounts.
• Adopt the established methods, tools, templates and standards of the credit origination capability and process in Commercial Banking and Client Channels (Commercial Markets).
• Accompany the Relationship Managers on client visits and meetings, to ensure the credit origination requirements are identified early in the deal-making process
• Guide the Relationship Managers in the preparation of credit proposals, ensuring adherence to the agreed credit origination standards, as well compliance, risk and regulatory policies and frameworks.
• Utilize industry risk analysis available to identify and understand the contextual threats to existing and potential clients.
• Participate in deal flows by contributing to, among others, the drafting of acceptable terms and conditions (term sheets) for the credit, and by acting as an advisor to the business line.
• Identify credit and risk management requirements at the initial stage of the deal negotiation/business evaluation interviews during deal negotiation to obtain sufficient and appropriate information to evaluate business risk and deal viability, from a credit risk perspective.
